SCAN2BIM: The process of 3D laser scanning a physical space or site to create an accurate digital representation of it. This representation can then be used for designing, assessing progress or evaluating option.

This process was brand new to the firm I assisted in getting this off the ground with. I was apart of a small team that innovated the process of SCAN2BIM for our company, my role in this was to evaluate different 3D laser scanning technologies to determine which was going to work best for our environment and workflows. Over that time I became very familiar with multiple different technologies as they relate to 3D laser scanning and the advantages / disadvantages of each. This process ultimately led to a mobile scanning workflow that prioritized speed and flexibility.

After the initial discovery process was complete and workflows were established I became the point person for completing the work on site and to train others. I created workflows for site work as well as for processing data after it is returned.

The last part of the SCAN2BIM initiative was to integrate these 3D Laser Scanning files with BIM files that the firm had been creating, this allowed us to verify existing conditions very quickly and be confident the design’s being created would not have any conflicts.

This process is now being used on nearly all new projects being started and has lead to less conflicts, more time for design, and better margins as time in the field can be drastically reduced.
